I — The Beginning
The beginning
AVELLAN starts where every honest workshop starts: at the very beginning. There is no archive behind this name, no inherited workshop, no long story to borrow. There is a person in Devon learning a craft properly, in the order it should be learned.
The work at this stage is quiet and unglamorous — drawing, and redrawing. Studying hides and how they behave when they are cut, skived, folded and burnished. Taking old bags apart to understand why they lasted, or why they failed. Restoring worn pieces because repair teaches more about construction than making ever does at the start.
Stitching is practised on offcuts, one line at a time, until the hand is steady enough to be trusted with good leather. Only after that will the first objects be made — few of them, by hand, and only when they are genuinely worth keeping.
Nothing is for sale yet. This site exists so the beginning is on the record.
II — Atelier Journal
Atelier journal
A working record of the bench rather than a gallery: leather as it arrives, tools as they wear in, sketches that go nowhere, restoration studies and stitching that is slowly getting straighter. Photographs from the workshop will be added here as the work progresses.

III — Philosophy
Our philosophy
- Longevity
- An object should outlast the interest in it. Materials and construction are chosen for decades, not seasons.
- Repairability
- Anything made should be able to be opened, restitched and returned to use. Repair is part of the design, not an afterthought.
- Discreet branding
- No visible logos. A mark, if any, sits quietly inside, where only the owner will find it.
- Craftsmanship
- Hand work where hand work matters: stitching, edges, and the parts nobody photographs.
- Provenance
- Honest about where leather comes from, where it is worked, and by whom.
- Fewer, better
- Making slowly, in small numbers. A short list of objects, each one earned.
IV — In Development
In development
Research in progress, shown as it is: open questions rather than finished answers. Nothing here is a product, and none of it may survive the drawing stage.

Silhouette studies
Proportion tested at full scale in paper and canvas before any leather is cut. Weight, balance, and how a shape sits against the body.

Closures
Trials of flaps, turnlocks and simple straps — judged on how they feel after a hundred openings, not how they look once.

Material & colour
Tannage comparisons and slow patina tests: how each hide darkens, marks and recovers over months of handling.

Hidden details
Internal reinforcement, edge treatment, stitch density, and the quiet interior structure that decides whether a piece survives.
